China has retained its position as the leading contributor to global research output for the second consecutive year, further widening its lead over the United States.

The recent report from Nature Index highlights that China's lead has increased over fourfold compared to the US, based on calendar-year data for 2024.

This significant shift occurred after the United States lost its top rank to China in 2023 in the Research Leaders list, which assesses contributions from countries, territories, and institutions to papers published in 145 top-tier health and natural sciences journals.

Notably, China's adjusted share of contributions rose by 17.4 percent in the last year, while the US saw a decline of 10.1 percent in its adjusted share.

At the institutional level, the report indicates that eight of the top ten global research institutions are based in China.

Leading the list is the Chinese Academy of Sciences, followed by Harvard University in second place and Germany's Max Planck Society at ninth.

The University of Science and Technology of China claims third position, with Zhejiang University experiencing a notable rise from tenth to fourth place.

Other Chinese institutions making the top ten include Peking University at fifth, the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences at sixth, Tsinghua University at seventh, Nanjing University at eighth, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University at tenth.

Additionally, the number of Chinese institutions appearing in the global top 50 has increased from 22 to 25 over the past year.

The data indicates a significant shift in the global research landscape, underlined by continued investment in science and technology by China.

This investment is yielding rapid and sustained growth in high-quality research outputs, particularly in fields such as physical sciences and chemistry, now surpassing contributions from traditionally dominant Western nations, including the United States.
