China Reaffirms Commitment to Stable Military Relations with the U.S. Amid Economic Consultation Mechanism Progress

Chinese defense and diplomatic officials emphasize the need for mutual respect and cooperation following recent economic talks in London.
BEIJING – China has reiterated its dedication to fostering a stable and constructive military relationship with the United States, as officials engage in ongoing economic consultations aimed at addressing bilateral trade issues.

During a press conference, Jiang Bin, a spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, stressed the importance of mutual respect and peaceful coexistence in managing relations between the two nations.

He called upon the U.S. to refrain from labeling China as a ‘threat’ and to prioritize dialogue to enhance understanding and trust.

The recent dialogues come in the wake of the first meeting of the China-U.S. economic and trade consultation mechanism, held in London on June 9 and 10. This meeting was characterized by candid discussions, allowing both parties to exchange views on economic matters of mutual concern.

They agreed in principle on a framework to implement the consensus reached by the leaders during their phone call on June 5, as well as agreements made during earlier discussions in Geneva.

During the London talks, officials highlighted the critical interdependence of the two largest global economies, emphasizing that a stable economic relationship is essential for the well-being of both nations and for broader global economic stability.

In 2024, trade between China and the U.S. reached approximately $688.3 billion, underlining the significance of collaboration in addressing international economic challenges.

China's commitment to cooperation was further evidenced by a report from the General Administration of Customs indicating a 7.2% increase in exports during the first five months of this year, reflecting resilience in its economy amidst global pressures.

Furthermore, China's leadership has consistently highlighted the importance of maintaining open channels for dialogue, viewing cooperation as vital to mitigating tensions.

Spokesperson Lin Jian echoed this sentiment, expressing hope that the U.S. would collaborate to fulfill the consensus made at the highest levels and enhance the role of the economic consultation mechanism.

He emphasized the need for concrete actions to build strategic trust and resolve economic divergences, which have been sources of tension in recent years.

Recent economic indicators show continued growth in China, with improvements in industrial output and retail sales, revealing the nation's resilience in the face of external challenges.

The stability of China-U.S. relations, particularly in the context of trade and economic interactions, is viewed as pivotal for both nations and the broader global community.

Going forward, both sides are urged to leverage established mechanisms to broaden common ground and reduce misunderstandings, fostering a climate conducive to mutual benefit.
