China Raises Concerns Over U.S. Missile Deployment in the Philippines

Beijing warns of geopolitical risks as Manila considers permanent deployment of the Typhon missile system.
On February 12, 2025, China expressed significant concerns regarding the ongoing deployment of the U.S. Typhon missile system in the Philippines.

Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the necessity for the Philippines to fulfill its commitment to withdraw this missile system.

He cautioned that the prolonged presence of U.S. military assets could jeopardize the Philippines' security and national defense, leading to heightened geopolitical tensions and a potential arms race in the region.

The Typhon missile system was first installed in the northern Philippines in April 2024 as part of joint military exercises between the United States and the Philippines.

At that time, the Philippines characterized the deployment as 'temporary,' with plans to retract the system post-exercises.

However, recent statements from the Philippine government indicate a reversal of this position, with intentions to possibly procure the system for enhancing national defense capabilities.

This development has raised alarm in Beijing, which views the linkage of the Typhon missile deployment to the geopolitical dynamics in the South China Sea as both 'ridiculous and dangerous,' according to Guo.

Guo further articulated that the Typhon missile, identified as a strategic offensive weapon with extensive range capabilities, poses a threat not only to China but also to the broader Southeast Asian region.

The official stated that such U.S. military actions undermine peace and stability and infringe upon the legitimate security interests of other nations.

In his remarks, Guo asserted that China cannot remain passive in the face of threats to its security interests and indicated a belief that other regional nations would also reject the continued U.S. military presence.

He called for the Philippines to make decisions that align with its sovereign interests and welfare of its citizens.

These developments occur amid broader discussions and concerns regarding military strategy and security in the Asia-Pacific region, where U.S. and Chinese interests often intersect.
