China Mobilizes for Extensive Relief Efforts Following Xizang Earthquake

Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing leads relief efforts amid a devastating earthquake in Xizang, emphasizing safety and warmth for affected residents.
On January 8, Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing emphasized comprehensive rescue operations following a powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake in the Xizang Autonomous Region.

The earthquake, which struck Dingri County in Xigaze city, resulted in the tragic loss of 126 lives and left 188 individuals injured.

As a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, Zhang Guoqing has underscored the necessity of maintaining the safety and well-being of residents affected by the winter-time disaster.

Upon arriving in the region, Zhang immediately proceeded to Changsuo Township, the most severely impacted area.

Here, he interacted with quake victims at various rescue sites, temporary shelters, and hospitals, while inspecting rescue operations and infrastructure repair efforts.

The Vice Premier's visit focused on ensuring the regular supply of medical treatment, relief goods, and appropriate living arrangements for residents facing harsh winter conditions in the high-altitude region.

He convened a meeting to strategize ongoing rescue activities and highlighted the urgency of providing adequate heating supplies for the affected population.

Additionally, Zhang called for heightened monitoring and early warning protocols for potential aftershocks.

He stressed the importance of inspecting damaged structures and identifying geological risks to avert further injuries or loss of life.

The Vice Premier also underlined the need to expedite post-disaster reconstruction to facilitate the rapid resettling of displaced residents into safe and warm accommodations.

The priority remains accelerating restoration activities while adapting to the challenging weather conditions.

China's swift response, underlined by Vice Premier Zhang's active leadership, underscores the country's commitment to ensuring the welfare of its citizens and the stability of Xizang during this calamity.

The prompt and coordinated efforts of Chinese authorities highlight a commitment to minimizing the disaster's impacts on human lives and infrastructure, ensuring an orderly return to normalcy for the residents of Xigaze.
