China Launches World's Largest Car Carrier, Anji Ansheng

The Anji Ansheng embarks on its inaugural journey, carrying 7,000 vehicles and marking a significant advancement in China's automotive export capacity.
Anji Ansheng, the largest ocean-going car carrier constructed in China, embarked on its maiden voyage to Europe on Thursday, carrying approximately 7,000 vehicles manufactured in China.

The ship set sail from the Shanghai Haitong International Automotive Terminal, demonstrating a milestone in China's rapidly developing automotive export capabilities.

The vessel's launch follows a recent achievement whereby another Chinese-built car carrier, BYD Shenzhen, briefly held the title of the largest in operation.

Reports indicate that Anji Ansheng is designed with substantial capacity, measuring 228 meters in length and 37.8 meters in width, and is capable of transporting up to 9,500 standard vehicles.

Advanced technologies for energy savings and intelligent low-carbon systems are integrated into Anji Ansheng, which emphasizes its enhanced energy efficiency.

Additionally, the carrier features a methanol refueling design, positioning it as a forward-thinking asset in alignment with global carbon neutrality goals.

According to industry official Zhuang Jingxiong, general manager of SAIC Anji Logistics Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of SAIC Motor Corporation Limited, this development highlights China's growing role in the global automotive transport sector.

Zheng Hehui, deputy general manager of China Merchants Industry Holdings, noted that the construction and delivery of such large-scale vehicle carriers are propelling China's ocean-going transport capacity.

Data from the General Administration of Customs of China revealed that Chinese automobile exports surpassed 6.4 million units in 2024, resulting in China retaining its status as the leading global exporter for a second consecutive year.

By the end of 2024, SAIC had exported over 5.5 million vehicles, with annual overseas sales exceeding 1 million units for three straight years.

Preliminary data for 2025 indicates that vehicle exports from China reached 1.93 million in the first four months, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 6 percent.

The Shanghai Haitong International Automotive Terminal reported a notable increase in vehicle exports, with 740,000 vehicles shipped during the first four months of 2025, representing a 25.1 percent rise compared to the previous year.

This growth is attributed to both the heightened competitiveness of Chinese automotive brands and the capabilities of the country’s automotive industry, according to Cui Dongshu, secretary general of the China Passenger Car Association.

The recent 2025 Shanghai Auto Show showcased China's automotive advancements with over 12,000 foreign dealers in attendance, reinforcing perceptions of reliability and value in Chinese vehicles.

Agustin Garcia, CEO of Spain's Sarmovil Auto Group, noted the balanced quality and price of Chinese cars, which has fostered confidence among consumers.

SAIC Anji Logistics is now among the preeminent vehicle shipping fleets worldwide.

By 2026, the fleet will expand to 22 vessels, covering routes to critical markets including Western Europe, Mexico, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.

Xie Xiaowen, an expert from the China Communications and Transportation Association, stated that owning a fleet provides manufacturers with stable export operations while minimizing transport costs and ensuring timely product delivery.
