China Issues Blue Alert as Cold Wave Sweeps Across the Nation

China's meteorological authority warns of significant temperature drops and strong winds affecting various regions.
On February 7, 2025, China's National Meteorological Center renewed a blue alert for a cold wave as it forecasted a significant drop in temperatures nationwide.

The cold wave, the first of the year, is expected to impact central and eastern China, with temperatures in some northern areas plummeting by more than 10 °C.

The China Meteorological Administration reported that freezing air is advancing southward from the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, affecting regions as far south as South China.

The temperature is predicted to decrease by 6 to 8 °C across most areas north of the Yellow River-Huaihe River line, while some regions in eastern Northwest China, North China, and the Yellow River-Huaihe River region may experience drops exceeding 10 °C.

For southern China, temperature declines are expected to range from 4 to 6 °C, with some areas forecasted to see drops of 7 to 8 °C, and others surpassing 10 °C.

Accompanying the cold wave, strong winds are anticipated, notably on the North China Plain, where sustained winds will reach intensity levels of 4 to 6 on the Beaufort scale, with gusts possibly soaring to levels 8 to 9. The National Meteorological Center emphasized that this wind event may be the most intense of the year thus far.

A yellow wind warning has been issued, predicting northwesterly winds of levels 5 to 6 and gusts reaching levels 7 to 8 in parts of North China, central Inner Mongolia, the Ningxia Hui autonomous region, northern Shaanxi province, and the Yellow River-Huaihe River region.

Coastal regions, including the Bohai Sea, the Bohai Strait, most of the Yellow Sea, the northern East China Sea, and the Taiwan Strait, are also expected to experience winds at levels 7 to 8, with gusts potentially reaching level 9.

Light rain is anticipated across much of southern China, while eastern Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang province, and Jilin province may experience light to moderate snowfall over the coming days.

The cold wave’s intensity is expected to decrease by the weekend, with temperatures in northern China forecasted to begin rising on Saturday and southern China anticipated to follow suit on Sunday, leading to an overall increase of about 10 °C. However, another cold front is projected to impact central and eastern regions around Wednesday.

In light of the recent temperature fluctuations, the public has been advised to monitor weather updates and dress appropriately.

In regions facing persistent strong winds, residents are encouraged to limit outdoor activities and be cautious in wind-prone areas, while drivers in high-speed conditions should maintain safe distances from large vehicles and adjust their speed accordingly.
