China Hosts First Humanoid Robot Boxing Tournament, Showcasing Robotics Innovations

The inaugural humanoid robot fighting tournament in Hangzhou highlights China's advancements in AI and robotics.
The China Media Group (CMG) World Robot Competition - Mecha Fighting Series commenced on May 25, 2025, in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, marking a significant milestone as the world's first combat sports event exclusively featuring humanoid robots.

The event showcased a variety of robots equipped with advanced combat skills, thereby presenting the technological capabilities of Chinese robotics firms.

During the tournament, humanoid robots engaged in competitive matches as well as demonstration bouts, all streamed live to a global audience.

Participants included robots developed by Unitree Robotics, a leading entity in the humanoid robotics sector.

The event featured one-on-one and group boxing displays, elucidating the intricate movements and capabilities of these machines.

Four teams of human operators controlled the robots during this tournament-style competition.

The robots displayed a range of boxing techniques, such as straight jabs, hooks, sidekicks, and aerial spins.

Remarkably, the robots demonstrated the ability to rise after being knocked down, highlighting their advanced design.

The flagship humanoid robot from Unitree, known as Unitree G1, measures 1.32 meters and weighs 35 kilograms.

It boasts sophisticated computing power and fluid motion control, designed to function effectively in challenging environments.

Industry experts pointed out that such robotic contests serve as rigorous testing grounds for structural integrity, motion control, and artificial intelligence decision-making.

The competition underscores a critical phase in the evolution of robotics that is likely to foster innovation in perception and control technologies, while also creating a talent pipeline for the burgeoning robotics industry in China.

Chinese humanoid robots have been on a trajectory of rapid advancement, having previously accomplished feats such as solving Rubik's Cubes, assisting in medical settings, and competing in marathon events.

The boxing tournament stands as a testament to China’s progress in artificial intelligence, robotics, and engineering capabilities.

According to Tian Feng, a former dean at SenseTime's Intelligence Industry Research Institute, combat sports demand robots to demonstrate not just strength, but also flexibility, learning abilities, and adaptability.

Prior to the fights, each robot underwent rigorous evaluations to ensure combat readiness.

Factors such as self-balancing capabilities, mobility, and precise movements were tested to refine event regulations.

The long-term vision involves developing even lighter and more intelligent robots for diverse applications.

Following this event, an upcoming tournament featuring full-sized humanoid robots is scheduled in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, for December 2025. This initiative, led by Shenzhen-based EngineAI, aims to bring attention to pioneering advancements in AI and robotics, while advocating for industrial upgrades and broader integration of robotic technologies.

The burgeoning robot combat sports industry is projected to grow rapidly, with multiple events being established, indicating significant potential in this field.

Chinese robotics firms, including Unitree, AgiBot, EngineAI, and Booster Robotics, are at the forefront of developing next-generation humanoid robots, hinting at a promising future in technology-driven entertainment.

Furthermore, forecasts by the Chinese Institute of Electronics estimate that the market for humanoid robots in China will reach 870 billion yuan (approximately $120 billion) by the year 2030.
