China Fosters Technological Sovereignty and International Cooperation in Science and AI

Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang emphasizes breakthroughs in core technologies and talent cultivation, as China advances in AI and space exploration.
BEIJING, May 30 – Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang recently urged members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) to lead the charge in achieving breakthroughs in crucial technologies and to nurture a skilled workforce aimed at bolstering China’s self-reliance as a global leader in science and technology.

Speaking at a symposium commemorating the 70th anniversary of CAS’ Academic Divisions, Ding highlighted the academy’s significant historical contributions to overcoming strategic technological challenges and fostering elite talent in scientific fields.

Ding characterized the academicians as integral to China’s scientific advancement, urging them to focus on critical technological innovation, talent development, and providing strategic guidance for the Communist Party of China’s key policies relating to science and technology.

He also accentuated the need for enhanced international scientific collaboration, encouraging academics to inspire younger generations to engage in research that contributes to national rejuvenation.

In a parallel development, the China-Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Forum was held on May 29 in Tianjin, where discussions were centered on expanding collaboration on AI technologies.

During the event, reports indicated that China’s core AI industry has reached a valuation of approximately 600 billion yuan (around 83.45 billion USD), with over 1.5 million patent applications, representing nearly 40% of global totals.

The AI systems being developed include agricultural innovations that are gaining popularity in Russia, where automated navigation technologies are streamlining agricultural processes.

Chinese AI applications have extended to various sectors including robotics for pool maintenance in Kazakhstan and heavy-duty automated vehicles for logistics in SCO countries.

Officials underscored China's readiness to work with fellow SCO members in establishing an AI application center aimed at fostering technological inclusivity and enhancing economic cooperation.

Meanwhile, China's space endeavors marked a significant leap forward with the recent launch of the Tianwen-2 mission, its first asteroid sample-return expedition, which aims to explore asteroid 2016HO3 and comet 311P. The mission was executed using the Long March-3B rocket, noted for its historical significance in China’s space program, facilitating over 500 launches.

On May 29, a new satellite, Shijian-26, was successfully launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center.

The satellite's primary functions include national land surveying and environmental management, representing a continued commitment to utilizing space technology to support national development goals.

In the domain of rocket technology, a Chinese startup successfully conducted a vertical sea recovery test for a rocket, furthering the nation’s capabilities in developing reusable launch systems.

Additionally, Chinese electric vehicle exports have surged, with the country becoming the world's largest car exporter, highlighting the global competitiveness of its automotive sector.

As these developments continue to unfold, China remains engaged in securing its position as a pivotal player in global technological advancement through both innovation and international collaboration.
