China as a Key Market for Bolivian Exports Amid US Tariff Challenges

Bolivia’s ambassador to China highlights opportunities for increased trade as the country diversifies its export offerings.
China is increasingly becoming a vital market for Bolivian exports, particularly as products from Bolivia face heightened tariffs in the United States.

Ambassador Hugo José Siles Núñez del Prado has articulated the potential for redirecting Bolivian goods to China, which he describes as a market with significant demand.

Recent statements from Bolivian President Luis Arce underscore this sentiment, praising the recent export of 25 tons of chia seeds to China as a 'historic milestone' that signals the vast potential of the Chinese market.

President Arce noted there is no limit on the volume of chia seed exports to China, positioning it as a strategic alternative to markets currently facing tariffs, where a 10 percent duty has been imposed by the US. The ambassador projected that chia exports, currently at 10,000 tons annually across 35 countries, could rise to 25,000 tons solely for the Chinese market, translating to approximately $33 million per year.

Over the next five years, he anticipates the capacity could reach 50,000 tons per year, positioning Bolivia as a leading global exporter of chia.

In addition to chia seeds, Bolivia is looking to expand its export portfolio to China, which already includes beef, soybeans, quinoa, and sesame.

New products, such as sorghum, meat by-products, leather, and processed poultry and pork, are also being introduced.

The ambassador highlighted that this diversification will significantly contribute to enhancing bilateral trade relations between Bolivia and China.

Moreover, some more niche products, such as coffee, sparkling wine, Singani liquor, and chocolate, have also made their way into the Chinese market.

There is a growing recognition of the potential for utilizing e-commerce platforms to expand exports further.

According to data from China's General Administration of Customs, bilateral trade between China and Bolivia reached $2.73 billion in 2024, a 5.4 percent increase from the previous year.

Notably, imports from Bolivia to China increased by 18 percent, reflecting the expanding opportunities for Bolivian products.

While agricultural exports lead the surge, the ambassador pointed to the ongoing industrialization of Bolivia’s natural resources as a crucial area for future trade, particularly highlighting lithium carbonate plants that are expected to produce battery-grade lithium for export to China.

The diplomatic representative also expressed concerns regarding the United States' protectionist trade policies, arguing that the imposition of unilateral tariffs could lead to a global economic downturn and a redirection of trade flows.

In response to these developments, several Latin American nations, including Bolivia, are proactively seeking to establish more stable and reliable trading relationships, with China emerging as a strategic partner.

Siles emphasized that while the US imposes arbitrary tariffs, China remains open to high-demand products, establishing its role as a formidable market for Bolivian exports.
