China and Uzbekistan Forge Green Energy Partnership for Sustainable Development

Enhanced collaboration in green energy marks a significant shift in investment focus between the two nations.
The Fourth Tashkent International Investment Forum is currently taking place in Tashkent, with Chinese enterprises actively exploring investment opportunities in Uzbekistan.

As the largest trading partner of Uzbekistan, China has become a pivotal source of investment, with a notable shift from traditional energy and infrastructure sectors towards new energy and high-tech manufacturing.

Uzbekistan, strategically located in Central Asia, plays a vital role in regional cooperation initiatives, including the China-supported Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and activities within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization framework.

These collaborative platforms provide critical discussion opportunities aimed at advancing green cooperation.

The recent presentation of the "Uzbekistan–2030" strategy signals an era of transformation under President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, emphasizing sustainable development and green energy projects.

This strategic focus is designed to cultivate a positive investment climate in the green energy sector.

Bilateral cooperation between China and Uzbekistan has increasingly centered on green energy initiatives.

In recent years, China has initiated a rapid transition towards a green and low-carbon development model, actively collaborating with BRI participant countries to establish a "Green Silk Road."

A recent media tour highlighted successful green cooperation projects, including the launch of Central Asia's largest Chinese-built wind farm in the Bukhara region, which has begun commercial operations.

This facility is integrated into Uzbekistan's national grid and is projected to produce 3.6 terawatt-hours of clean energy annually, significantly contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions by approximately 1.6 million tonnes.

The Uzbekistan government has set a target to increase the proportion of renewable energy in the national consumption mix to 50 percent by 2030.

Promoting electric vehicles also constitutes a significant aspect of Uzbekistan's green growth strategy.

The establishment of the BYD factory in the Jizzakh region is set to manufacture electric vehicles (EVs) with an initial production capacity of 50,000 cars annually.

Supported by government incentives, EV sales in Uzbekistan have surged, positioning the country as the leading market for electric vehicles in Central Asia.

China's technological advancements in solar power, wind power, hydropower, and electric vehicles provide a substantial foundation for Uzbekistan's transition to more sustainable energy solutions.

The emphasis on these sectors was reiterated during the 2023 China-Central Asia Summit held in Xi'an, which underscored the commitment to enhancing cooperation in the green economy.

As leaders gather in Astana this month, China's initiatives to promote a green transformation are poised to yield significant advantages for Uzbekistan and the broader Central Asian region.
