China and South Korea Reaffirm Diplomatic Ties Ahead of Trilateral Meeting

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasizes the importance of cooperation and bilateral relations during a meeting with South Korean counterpart Cho Tae-yul.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reiterated China's commitment to fostering strong ties with South Korea during a meeting with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul in Tokyo on Friday, ahead of the 11th China-Japan-ROK Trilateral Foreign Ministers' Meeting.

Wang stated that, regardless of shifts in the domestic landscape of the Republic of Korea (ROK), China aims to uphold the principles of good-neighborliness and mutual friendship.

During their discussions, Wang highlighted the inseparable partnership between China and the ROK, expressing a desire for South Korea to maintain the founding spirit of their diplomatic relations and pursue positive and friendly policies towards China.

He called for collaboration in directing the China-ROK strategic cooperative partnership to enhance regional and global peace and prosperity.

Wang further announced China's ambitious economic and social development goals, set during the annual Two Sessions, showcasing continued strong growth and resilience in the Chinese economy.

He indicated that such development would create new opportunities for the ROK and other nations through avenues of high-quality growth.

Both nations are set to host the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in the near future, and Wang emphasized the need for both sides to realize the agreements established by their leaders and to assist one another in organizing the upcoming events.

In observance of the 10th anniversary of the China-ROK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), Wang urged an acceleration of negotiations toward the second phase of the FTA, aiming for a swift agreement to facilitate strong trade relations.

Wang also addressed global economic challenges, noting the need for both countries to champion free trade and collectively oppose unilateralism and coercion, thereby preserving the stability and efficiency of international supply and industrial chains.

In response, Cho congratulated China on the successful conclusion of its annual legislative sessions and expressed hope for China’s continued progress in modernization.

He underscored the ROK's commitment to bilateral cooperation and the importance of recent improved relations between the two countries.

Cho indicated the ROK's willingness to leverage the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting and other platforms to enhance high-level exchanges and broaden cooperation in sectors such as local governance, cultural exchanges, and inter-parliamentary relations.

He emphasized the ROK's dedication to collaborating with China to ensure regional peace and stability amid a complex international context.

The dialogue also included discussions on enhancing China-Japan-ROK cooperation and addressed the situation on the Korean Peninsula, reflecting a shared interest in regional stability and mutual concerns.
