China Advances Space Strategy with Successful Sea Launch of Smart Dragon-3 Rocket

Offshore launch from Shandong represents a milestone in China's capabilities for deploying small commercial satellites.
In a strategic leap for China's burgeoning space industry, the Smart Dragon-3 (SD-3) rocket embarked on a sea-based launch from the waters near Haiyang city, Shandong Province, at 11 a.m. Beijing time on January 13, 2025. This event marked the inaugural low-inclination orbit deployment from this maritime location, with the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center supervising the operation.

The SD-3, developed by the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology, stands 31 meters tall and weighs 140 tonnes.

The mission successfully placed the CentiSpace 01 satellite group into its designated orbit.

Liu Wei, the deputy chief designer of the SD-3, emphasized the significance of the launch site choice, which was driven by considerations of safety and economic efficiency.

Launching from Haiyang reduces maritime navigation costs, cut technical preparation times, and allows for rapid response to launch demands.

Liu also highlighted the launch as a test of the rocket's resilience in facing the challenging maritime conditions characteristic of winter.

This mission involved the deployment of 10 CentiSpace 01 satellites, tasked with gathering space environment data and conducting intersatellite laser networking tests.

Weighing in with a payload capacity of 1,600 kg, the launch marked the heaviest payload carried by the SD-3 to date.

The SD-3 is part of the Dragon rocket family, developed to address the increasing commercial demand for deploying low-orbit satellites.

This need has been driven by the rapid expansion of global satellite networks, which provide critical services such as enhanced communication infrastructures and earth observation capabilities.

Diverging from China's more traditional Long March rockets—which are central to larger payload operations—the Dragon series caters to small commercial satellite launches, increasingly vital for private enterprise and state applications alike.

Since initiating sea-based launch operations in 2019, Haiyang has become a focal point for oceanic rocket launches in China, completing 15 missions and successfully sending 89 satellites into space.

China's consistent engagement with maritime launches underscores its commitment to diversifying and modernizing its space launch capabilities, aligning with a strategic vision to become a leader in the global aerospace sector.

Monday's mission is an emblem of China's persistent pursuit of innovation and adaption within the space technology arena.
