China Advances Fusion Research with New Linear Plasma Device 'Chixiao'

China's breakthrough positions it alongside the Netherlands in developing cutting-edge materials for the 'artificial sun'.
In a significant leap forward for nuclear fusion research, Chinese scientists have unveiled a pioneering linear plasma device, named 'Chixiao,' designed to bolster the development of core materials essential for the 'artificial sun', Xinhua News Agency reported.

This technological marvel, which emanates from the laboratories of the Hefei Institutes of Physical Sciences (HFIPS) within the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), marks China as the second nation worldwide, after the Netherlands, to possess such advanced capabilities.

The 'artificial sun' concept embodies the vision of creating controlled nuclear fusion, a process promising an almost inexhaustible and clean energy source.

However, the challenge of developing superlative materials that can withstand the intense impact of plasma particle flows during fusion processes remains formidable.

Innovatively addressing this, the HFIPS team has designed 'Chixiao' to rigorously test and validate the materials needed for constructing the fusion reactor's inner 'wall'.

Zhou Haishan, a leading researcher from the Institute of Plasma Physics under HFIPS, elucidates the necessity for advanced simulation tools to assess the durability and resilience of such materials under extreme conditions.

The 'Chixiao' device, with its impressive ability to release a stream of particles at a staggering intensity of 10^24 per square meter per second, operates continuously for over 24 hours, thereby providing a robust environment for testing.

Noteworthy is the engineering feat achieved - the device spans 15.5 meters in length, with a weight of 22.5 tons, shaped distinctively like a sword, which inspired its name after 'Chixiao,' one of the top ten legendary swords of ancient China.

Following thorough expert assessments on Tuesday, the device's capabilities were verified to align with its design specifications, reinforcing its pivotal role in advancing China's nuclear fusion research.

This development is expected to play a crucial role in the progress of the Chinese Fusion Engineering Testing Reactor (CFETR).

China's ongoing advancements in nuclear fusion signal its prominent standing on the global stage of technological innovation, further opening doors for international scientific collaboration.

The 'Chixiao' device will not only bolster domestic research efforts but also offer a platform for shared international exploration of fusion technologies.

The deployment of such advanced research apparatus underscores China's commitment to addressing the global energy challenge by harnessing the potential of fusion energy, resonating with the broader international endeavor to transition towards sustainable and clean energy sources.
