Celebrating Cultural Ties: China and Ethiopia Mark 55 Years of Diplomatic Relations

A grand event in Addis Ababa underscores the deepening cultural and economic ties between China and Ethiopia as both nations celebrate the Chinese New Year.
In the heart of Addis Ababa, a jubilant celebration on Sunday brought together thousands of people in honor of the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Ethiopia and the forthcoming Chinese New Year.

The event, held at the iconic Friendship Park—built by a Chinese contractor—featured an array of vibrant activities, including a charity bazaar, captivating Chinese cultural performances, traditional Chinese cuisine, and free medical services.

This year's Spring Festival, falling on January 29, heralds the Year of the Snake according to the Chinese lunar calendar.

Among those attending was Alem Sileshi, a long-time resident of Bishoftu, a town located 45 km east of Ethiopia's capital.

Married to a Chinese national for 17 years, Sileshi exemplifies the growing people-to-people and cross-cultural ties between China and Ethiopia.

Her family, a blend of Ethiopian and Chinese traditions, enjoys a harmonious fusion of cultural practices, including culinary delights from both nations.

Sileshi's experiences reflect broader social dynamics, as more Ethiopians, including her sister and neighbors, engage in cross-cultural marriages.

These personal bridges contribute to a deeper mutual understanding between the two nations.

At the event, she expressed her appreciation for the cultural exchange, noting the similarities between Ethiopian and Chinese cuisines.

The charity bazaar stood out for its noble purpose of supporting Ethiopian children with intellectual disabilities, with participation from 61 Chinese and local companies.

Proceeds from the bazaar, organized with the assistance of the Chinese Embassy and the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Ethiopia, will benefit the Deborah Foundation, a local non-profit dedicated to aiding people with intellectual disabilities.

China and Ethiopia's relationship dates back over five decades and has been marked by mutual respect, equality, and shared development goals.

This foundation has been fortified since Emperor Haile Selassie's notable trip to Beijing in 1971. Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia, Chen Hai, emphasized the significance of the Spring Festival as a cultural showcase recently recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Ambassador Chen hailed the event as a starting point for implementing the outcomes of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Summit held in Beijing, furthering modernization efforts.

Ethiopia's State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mesganu Arga, underscored the partnership's cultural and economic dimensions, highlighting shared values and historical ties.

Arga pointed to Chinese investments like the Eastern Industrial Zone and the Adama Wind Farm as pivotal to Ethiopia's industrialization and technological progress.

He also noted the significant number of Ethiopian students and professionals who have benefited from Chinese educational programs, advocating for continued cultural and educational exchanges to enrich human capital.

As Ethiopia looks to the future, Minister Arga invited Chinese investors to explore opportunities in sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, mining, tourism, and the digital economy, aligning with Ethiopia's goals for sustainable development and economic growth.
