BMW and Alibaba have announced an expansion of their strategic partnership in China, focusing on the integration of large-language-model (LLM) artificial intelligence (AI) into BMW's next-generation vehicles.

This collaboration, part of BMW's full-chain AI strategy in China, was unveiled during an announcement by BMW on March 26. It focuses on utilizing AI LLMs and improved vocal interaction technologies.

The two companies will jointly develop an AI engine based on Alibaba's Qwen LLM.

This technology is set to enhance the in-car Intelligent Personal Assistant in BMW's upcoming Neue Klasse models, which will be manufactured in China and launched in 2026. Sean Green, president and CEO of BMW Group Region China, emphasized the importance of their partnership with Alibaba, highlighting it as a model of mutual growth through collaborative efforts.

Additionally, BMW has established its largest research and development (R&D) network outside Germany in China, with centers located in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang, and Nanjing.

This expansion indicates the company's commitment to innovation in electric mobility and intelligent technologies.

Eddie Wu, CEO of Alibaba Group, remarked that their partnership with BMW represents a significant advancement in the application of AI in manufacturing, stating that the integration of Qwen into BMW’s systems could greatly revolutionize mobility.

BMW and Alibaba have been working together since 2015, collaborating across multiple sectors including cloud computing, logistics, and smart manufacturing.

Furthermore, BMW recently entered into a separate partnership with Huawei to create a tailored in-car digital ecosystem specifically designed for the Chinese market.

In a broader context, the partnership aligns with China's ongoing efforts to foster technological advancements and innovation within the automotive sector.
