Beijing Subway Achieves Comprehensive Coverage for Five Major Card Schemes

The Beijing subway becomes the first in the world to accept JCB and American Express for seamless transit access.
Starting from a recent Sunday, the Beijing subway has officially implemented contactless tap-and-go access and ticket purchasing capabilities for internationally issued JCB and American Express cards.

This initiative positions the Beijing subway system as the world’s first to offer full network coverage for all five leading card schemes, including UnionPay, Mastercard, Visa, JCB, and American Express.

The upgrades, which cover all 29 operational subway lines within Beijing’s transport network, including two airport lines and a total of 523 stations, allow passengers to use their cards at all fare gates.

This advancement facilitates a streamlined payment process, enabling travelers to simply tap their cards on the turnstile's sensor for immediate access without the requirement to purchase tickets in advance or utilize an app.

Additionally, the updated service permits cardholders to purchase single-journey tickets for others at the self-service ticket vending machines, which have been reconfigured to support the new card types without hardware changes, according to Zhang Li, chief expert at Beijing Infrastructure Investment Co., Ltd.

Beyond providing access via contactless cards, the Beijing rail transport system has also designed a fully integrated payment environment aimed at foreign passengers, enhancing the overall convenience of travel.

This includes options to adjust fares at self-service machines when applicable, supporting travelers who may face over-distance or overtime situations.

Feedback from users has been positive; for instance, a Canadian tourist named Nick utilized an American Express card at Caoqiao Station on the Beijing Daxing Airport Line, describing the upgrade as 'really convenient'.

This initiative follows the earlier inclusion of Mastercard and Visa support as part of a broader strategy to enhance payment convenience within the city's transportation infrastructure, which has seen significant improvements since the introduction of the first overseas-issued bank card tap-and-go service on September 13, 2024. Since then, over 130 countries and regions are represented, with no reported complaints regarding the service.

The complete integration of these payment options highlights Beijing's commitment to improving urban transit services and further supports its goal of attracting international tourism.
