Beijing Prepares for WTT China Smash 2025 with Enhanced Fan Engagement Initiatives

The World Table Tennis event is set to attract global competitors and audiences, showcasing Beijing's commitment to sports and community interaction.
Beijing is set to host the World Table Tennis (WTT) China Smash 2025 from September 25 to October 5, enhancing the spectator experience at Shougang Park, a venue formerly used for the big air events during the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

During a press conference on June 6, WTT Events Executive Director Mounir Bessah highlighted the event as both a prestigious sporting occasion and a testament to innovation in table tennis.

The competition will feature the top-ranked players in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles events.

Bessah emphasized the significance of the China Smash as a platform that embodies both the tradition and progress within the sport, aimed at connecting fans and athletes across generations.

He Xiao, secretary-general of the Chinese Table Tennis Association (CTTA), described plans to merge innovation with the rich history of table tennis in China, leveraging Beijing's unique status as a dual Olympic host city.

CTTA aims to foster collaboration with local communities, schools, and sports teams to broaden the event's reach through various community engagements, including charity initiatives.

For this edition, Shougang Park will be transformed into a “Grand Smash-themed Park” that will feature an interactive experience zone, exhibitions showcasing Chinese table tennis culture, and over 20 parallel activities, including meet-and-greets with players and public challenge tournaments.

These initiatives are designed to immerse fans in the excitement of table tennis beyond the competitive matches.

Beijing aims to reinforce its reputation as a leading host city for international sports events, having already hosted significant competitions in 2025, including the ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships, the Beijing Half Marathon, and the World Aquatics Diving World Cup Super Final.

Planned events later in the year include the China Open tennis tournament and the Beijing Marathon.

The China Smash is anticipated to attract a diverse array of athletes and fans globally, with a total prize pool of $2,050,000 and a distribution of 2000 ITTF Table Tennis World Ranking points for each champion.

Bessah reinforced WTT's commitment to player well-being by introducing new measures such as optimized rules and increased prize money, alongside making participation in Grand Smashes optional.

The previous edition of the China Smash in 2024 featured notable performances, including a comeback victory by Lin Shidong, currently ranked world No. 1, over Ma Long, a six-time Olympic champion, marking Lin's first WTT Grand Smash title.

Sun Yingsha, the 2023 World Table Tennis Championships winner, also secured the women's singles title against Wang Manyu in 2024.

Shijingshan has been designated to host the China Smash for five consecutive years, extending through 2028.
