Anhui's Cultural Heritage Takes Center Stage on Trains Ahead of Spring Festival

Railway initiative highlights intangible cultural legacies, enriching travel experiences during China's busiest travel season.
As China braces for the annual Spring Festival travel rush, a period notorious for mass migration, trains in Anhui Province are offering passengers more than just transportation this year.

The Hefei branch of China Railway Shanghai Bureau Group Co., Ltd. has launched an initiative that transforms train C3685 into a moving showcase of Anhui's intangible cultural heritage.

On January 13, 2025, the initiative was brought to life in a vibrant, interactive display.

One of the highlights was Wang Jian, an esteemed artist recognized as an inheritor of the Luzhou eggshell carving technique, a provincial-level intangible heritage of Anhui.

His delicate carvings, presented to passengers, offered a glimpse into traditional craftsmanship deeply rooted in local culture.

But the cultural showcase did not stop there.

In an effort to create a truly immersive experience, train attendants donned costumes to perform Huangmei Opera, which holds national-level recognition as an intangible cultural heritage in China.

The opera is known for its unique blend of spoken word, song, and dance, captivating both young and old.

Passengers were also invited to partake in several hands-on activities.

Staff members engaged travelers with traditional calligraphy, offering personalized works of the Chinese character 'Fu,' symbolizing 'good fortune.' This gesture ties into the customary practices of Spring Festival, where such characters are prominently displayed to invite prosperity into homes.

This innovative melding of transport and culture took place ahead of the Spring Festival, a time when hundreds of millions of Chinese people travel home to celebrate with their families.

It is estimated that during this period, the nation's railways accommodate the highest volume of travelers worldwide, making such initiatives critical in enhancing travel experiences while preserving cultural identity.

The strategy of integrating cultural heritage into public transport has broader implications, highlighting the value of cultural preservation in rapidly modernizing societies.

By turning a routine train ride into an unexpected cultural journey, the Hefei branch fosters a greater appreciation of local traditions and connects passengers more deeply with the cultural fabric of Anhui.

The efforts of China Railway Shanghai Bureau Group Co., Ltd. not only provide entertainment and educational value but also play a significant role in safeguarding the rich cultural tapestry of China amid globalization.

Through such localized initiatives, cultures not only endure but are perpetually revitalized for future generations.
