AI Integration in Chinese Primary and Secondary Education

AI Integration in Chinese Primary and Secondary Education

Chinese schools embrace artificial intelligence to enhance learning experiences and classroom efficiency.
In a fourth-grade classroom at Xinyilu Primary School in Qinhuangdao, Hebei province, a student engaged with a virtual rendition of Confucius, seeking insight on the value of reviewing lessons.

This interaction exemplifies the emerging trend of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into education, where historical figures provide interactive learning experiences.

Experts in education, such as Xue Lan, the dean of the Schwarzman College at Tsinghua University, highlight the transformative potential of AI in redefining educational practices and structures.

"As a personalized learning hub, AI offers limitless possibilities," Xue stated, underscoring the expansive role that technology can play in advancing education.

The Tianjin Huiwen Middle School has undertaken a progressive approach to AI in education, evolving through three distinct phases since 2017. Initial efforts included establishing a sci-tech club focused on robotics and competitions.

By 2022, the school expanded its AI educational framework, introducing innovative courses centered on robotics, drones, and participation in the RoboMaster competition.

Currently, AI facilitates daily teaching processes, acting as a virtual assistant that enhances traditional learning environments.

According to Principal Yao Hairong of Xinyilu Primary School, classrooms are now equipped with smart interactive boards and AI assistants, which foster real-time interactions and improve learning outcomes.

"This not only enhances teaching efficiency but also significantly boosts students' learning engagement," Yao noted.

Parental feedback has largely been positive, with many recognizing that AI-driven learning enriches the educational experience.

One parent, surnamed Li, shared that her daughter has developed a keen interest in technology, specifically in creating PowerPoint presentations and utilizing AI-generated templates.

However, there are concerns among educators and parents regarding the limitations of AI-generated teaching materials.

Ni Lili, a teacher at Xinyilu Primary School, remarked on the need for personalization in AI outputs, stating, "Presentations, speeches, and supplementary materials produced by AI often lack personalization and do not fully reflect a teacher's particular style." Ni also pointed out that AI-generated multimedia content sometimes requires supplementary adjustments to align with educational objectives.

Additionally, some parents worry that an over-reliance on AI tools may undermine students' problem-solving abilities.

Li observed that her daughter may instinctively seek answers from AI instead of attempting to solve difficult questions independently.

Education experts emphasize that AI should supplement student learning, guiding them to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills rather than merely providing solutions.

As part of a broader initiative, in February 2024, the Ministry of Education identified 184 schools as pilot centers to explore AI education methodologies.

This initiative aims to cultivate exemplary educational models that can be expanded nationwide.

In late 2024, the Ministry released a directive with strategic goals aimed at enhancing AI integration in primary and secondary education.

Key objectives include establishing a structured AI curriculum, promoting AI-driven teaching and assessment, and achieving comprehensive AI education by 2030. This approach is intended to equip students with essential AI literacy and practical skills necessary for the future.
