A Celebration of Friendship: China and Ethiopia Commemorate 55 Years of Diplomatic Ties

Cultural Exchange and Mutual Cooperation Mark the Chinese New Year Celebration in Addis Ababa
On January 13, 2025, thousands gathered in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, for an event celebrating two significant milestones: the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Ethiopia, and the upcoming Chinese New Year, which will usher in the Year of the Snake on January 29. The celebration took place at Friendship Park, a symbol of the enduring partnership, which was constructed by a Chinese contractor.

The event was a kaleidoscope of cultural exchange, featuring a charity bazaar, vibrant Chinese cultural performances, traditional cuisine, and free medical services.

These activities were organized by the Chinese Embassy and the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Ethiopia, highlighting the blend of cultures shared by the two nations.

Alem Sileshi, an Ethiopian woman married for 17 years to a Chinese national, reflected on her experience during the event.

Sileshi and her family embody the growing people-to-people connections between the two countries.

With a rich blend of traditions, her family celebrates both Ethiopian and Chinese holidays, a testament to the cross-cultural dialogue that has flourished at the community level.

Another attendee, Munir Mohammed, participated in the charity bazaar, where proceeds were dedicated to supporting Ethiopian children with intellectual disabilities.

This noble initiative saw contributions from 61 Chinese and local companies, with funds going to the Deborah Foundation, which supports these vulnerable communities.

China's ambassador to Ethiopia, Chen Hai, emphasized that the Spring Festival, recently recognized by UNESCO as part of the world's Intangible Cultural Heritage, serves as a vital opportunity to share Chinese traditions globally.

Chen expressed optimism for the future, viewing the anniversary as a launching pad for deeper cooperation, aligned with the outcomes of the last Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Summit.

Ethiopia’s State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mesganu Arga, underscored the deep-rooted friendship between the two nations, which has grown beyond economic collaboration to encompass extensive cultural ties.

Highlighting Chinese investments in Ethiopia, such as the Eastern Industrial Zone and the Adama Wind Farm, Arga also pointed to the thousands of Ethiopian students who have advanced their education through Chinese scholarships.

Both nations view the partnership as a key driver of industrialization and technological progress in Ethiopia, with Arga inviting Chinese investors to further explore sectors like agriculture, mining, and the digital economy.

Through joint initiatives and people-to-people exchanges, China and Ethiopia have cultivated mutual understanding and solidarity, enriching the lives of their citizens.

The celebration in Addis Ababa exemplified this enduring camaraderie, setting a positive tone for future collaboration.
