The Remarkable Geological Landscape of the Hexi Corridor

Exploring the ancient trade route's stunning landforms shaped by tectonic forces over millions of years.
The Hexi Corridor, situated in Northwest China, stands as both a historical trade route and a testament to the Earth's geological processes.

The corridor's landscape has been sculpted by natural forces that have acted over tens of millions of years, predating human existence in the region.

The genesis of the corridor can be traced back to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, a process that commenced approximately 50 million years ago and continues to this day.

This dramatic geological activity has resulted in the formation of diverse landforms, including plateaus and prominent mountain ranges.

Central to the Hexi Corridor are the Qilian Mountains, which emerged from tectonic forces and play a critical role in sustaining local ecosystems.

The mountains serve as a crucial source of meltwater, which nourishes major rivers and recharges underground aquifers, thereby supporting life in an otherwise arid region.

Key locations for visitors to explore include Zhangye and Dunhuang, both significant oasis towns along the corridor's historical route.

In Zhangye, the famous Danxia landforms, a term established by Chinese geologists in the 1920s, serve as a major attraction.

These formations, which date back to a time when the area was submerged beneath an ocean, were thrust skyward by tectonic shifts, revealing layered sedimentary rocks.

The term 'Danxia' translates to 'the red afterglow' in Chinese, highlighting the landscape's striking rusty red hues, a result of iron oxide.

Zhangye is home to numerous Danxia sites, including the Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon and the Zhangye National Geopark, most notably featuring the 'Colorful Danxia.' This area showcases a vibrant spectrum of colors shaped by various minerals, such as iron sulfide for yellow and high concentrations of chloride and iron silicate for green and blue tones.

The scenery transforms with the seasons, displaying different visual impressions at dawn and dusk, while snow in late winter adds a gentle softness to the rugged terrain.

Visitors seeking panoramic views of the geopark can opt for helicopter or hot air balloon rides, which provide a bird's-eye perspective that reveals the ocean-like undulations of the land.

Dunhuang's Yardang National Geopark offers another geological spectacle, with Yardang, or 'Yadan' in Chinese, referring to landforms shaped by persistent desert winds.

Among these formations is 'Devil City,' known for its eerie beauty and unique structures.

The wind's relentless action has sculpted sandstone into three distinctive shapes: walls, towers, and pillars, collectively forming a natural representation of the Great Wall against the vast backdrop of the Gobi Desert.

Within the geopark, a five-square-kilometer area showcases a stunning arrangement of these landforms, so orderly that they appear as if frozen in time, captivating all who observe them.
