Reviving the Legacy of Hongshan Culture in Modern China

Commitment to preservation and innovative utilization of Neolithic heritage in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia.
Chifeng, located in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China, serves as a focal point for the preservation and promotion of the Hongshan culture, a significant archaeological phenomenon from the Neolithic era.

With over 700 known relic sites, the city stands as both the birthplace and the namesake of this ancient culture, which encompasses areas in western Liaoning Province, northern Hebei Province, and eastern Inner Mongolia.

Volunteers like Zhang Zhijia, 38, are actively involved in educating the public about Hongshan culture at the Chifeng Museum.

As a passionate advocate, Zhang recounts stories of jade artifacts, including dragons and silkworms, which have captivated him since childhood.

He emphasizes the importance of sharing knowledge and fostering an appreciation for history, especially among younger generations.

In recent archaeological developments, 2024 marked the discovery of three jade dragons, among which was the largest ever found, measuring 15.8 centimeters in length.

This significant find, unearthed from a stone tomb in Yuanbaoshan in Chifeng's Aohan Banner, is not only pivotal to understanding the civilization's artistic practices but has also inspired various creative industries.

Guo Lei, 45, leads a cultural and creative company under the Chifeng culture and tourism group.

His work focuses on developing products inspired by Hongshan artifacts, including newly designed refrigerator magnets.

Guo aims to merge aesthetics with cultural heritage, providing avenues for visitors to connect with the history of Hongshan.

Parallel to these efforts, Li Jiawei, a 24-year-old graduate student in cultural relics at Chifeng University, is committed to advancing archaeological research.

Li aspires to uncover more artifacts that tell the stories of the ancestors.

He expresses a desire to engage a broader audience with the narrative of the Hongshan culture through his future research and findings.

In Chifeng, initiatives to celebrate and educate about the Hongshan culture include themed research activities, performances, and culinary experiences inspired by ancient traditions.

Vice Mayor Zhang Guohua highlights the city's mission of integrating historical research with modern industrial development, contributing to cultural empowerment and preservation.
