Global Auto Giants Look to China for Future Vision

Domestic innovation reshapes the automotive landscape as foreign manufacturers reassess strategies in the world's largest car market.
At the recent Auto Shanghai show, Volkswagen's chairman, Oliver Blume, acknowledged the company's missteps in its strategic approach to the Chinese market.

Stating that the German manufacturer did not possess the right product strategy when he first attended the event two years ago, Blume highlighted the company's current successes in demonstrating real results to back its ambitions in China.

Volkswagen's partnership with China dates back to October 1984 when it established a joint venture with the Shanghai Automobile & Tractor Company, forming what is now SAIC Volkswagen.

Initially skeptical about the potential for Chinese manufacturing to meet Volkswagen’s standards, the assembly of the Santana model in late 1985 marked a significant milestone.

This model would lead to a fruitful collaboration lasting over three decades, with Volkswagen and other foreign automobile manufacturers, including Peugeot, Fiat, Toyota, and Hyundai, benefiting from China’s economic reforms and contributions from skilled local labor.

By 2009, China emerged as the world’s largest vehicle market, with foreign brands capturing approximately 56 percent of total vehicle sales, as reported by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

However, the dominance of overseas manufacturers began to wane with the rise of new energy vehicles (NEVs).

Volkswagen's sales in China fell from 3.85 million units in 2020 to 2.92 million units in 2024, reflecting a broader trend impacting many foreign automakers.

Similarly, Hyundai's sales dwindled from 507,000 units in 2020 to just 157,000 units in 2024. General Motors experienced a decline from 2.9 million units to 1.83 million units during the same period.

In stark contrast, Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has seen extraordinary growth, with its sales skyrocketing from 427,000 units in 2020 to 4.27 million units in 2024. The rapid advancements in domestic innovation and the growing focus on NEVs have reshaped the competitive landscape of the automotive sector in China, compelling global giants to adapt their strategies to align with this evolving market.
