Chinese Travelers Opt for Local Destinations During Dragon Boat Festival

Local and family-focused trips dominate travel plans as the Dragon Boat Festival approaches.
During the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival holiday, spanning from May 31 to June 2, travel trends indicate a significant shift towards local and family-oriented excursions.

Data from the online tourism platform Mafengwo highlights a surge in local travel interest, with searches for nearby destinations increasing by over 50 percent, and road trips experiencing a notable 65 percent weekly rise leading up to the holiday.

The festival coincides with Children's Day, prompting a remarkable 152 percent weekly increase in searches for family trips.

Families are particularly leaning towards attractions such as theme parks, zoos, museums, and traditional activities associated with the Dragon Boat Festival.

Beijing Universal Resort has emerged as a highly favored destination among families.

Popular holiday destinations include major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Chengdu in Sichuan province, and Guangzhou in Guangdong province.

Travelers departing from Beijing are increasingly opting for road trips to the picturesque grasslands and volcanic geological park in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, or to explore the ancient architecture found in Shanxi province.

Meanwhile, individuals from Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang are drawn to scenic drives along Qiandao Lake and Fuchun River, known for their stunning landscapes.

Traditional Dragon Boat races will take place in cities such as Foshan in Guangdong province, Chongqing, and Tongren in Guizhou province, drawing visitors eager to embrace the festive spirit.

Tourists will also have the opportunity to engage in intangible cultural heritage activities across scenic locations nationwide, including the preparation of _zongzi_, which are sticky rice dumplings traditionally consumed during the festival.

For those considering international travel, visa-free destinations such as Jeju Island in the Republic of Korea and Singapore are gaining popularity.

Many outbound travelers utilize artificial intelligence tools to plan their journeys, focusing on cultural and culinary experiences in these attractive locales.
