Chinese Researchers Advance Technological Innovations in Astronomy and Biology

Recent developments include an AI model for predicting stellar flares, the discovery of a new tree frog species, and advancements in humanoid robotics.
BEIJING, May 27 -- Chinese scientists have developed FLARE, an advanced artificial intelligence model aimed at predicting stellar flares, marking a significant breakthrough in astronomical research.

This novel AI tool, co-developed by the Institute of Automation under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the CAS National Astronomical Observatories, leverages the integrated intelligent research platform ScienceOne to analyze stellar data and forecast magnetic eruptions on stars.

Stellar flares are explosive events caused by the release of magnetic fields in a star's atmosphere, crucial for understanding stellar structure and the potential habitability of exoplanets.

Chen Yingying, a researcher involved in the project, highlighted that several physical properties of stars, including age, rotation velocity, and mass, along with historical flare records, correlate significantly with flare events.

The FLARE model integrates these star properties and the flare history through a unique architecture that enhances prediction accuracy, adapting its forecasts based on various light curve patterns from different stars.

The effectiveness of this model has garnered recognition, with its research paper accepted by the 34th International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence.

Meanwhile, researchers in Xizang Autonomous Region have identified a new species of tree frog, named Rhacophorus medogensis.

The discovery was made during surveys in mountainous areas of Medog County where specimens were collected and initially misclassified as the common two-spotted tree frog.

Comprehensive morphological comparisons and molecular analyses established clear distinctions from the two-spotted variant, necessitating the new classification.

This study has important implications for understanding biodiversity in this ecologically rich region.

The field of robotics in China is also witnessing rapid advancements.

The rollout of humanoid robots, such as Mornine, has gained momentum.

Standing 1.67 meters tall and equipped with advanced technologies like 3D lidar and large language models, these robots are designed to assist in various commercial settings, starting with automobile dealerships.

The first batch of 220 units developed by Moga Technology Co., Ltd, a subsidiary of Chery, has been delivered globally.

The robots are set to expand usage beyond commercial environments into public service and domestic applications.

Predictions indicate that China's humanoid robot market could reach approximately 870 billion yuan (around 121 billion U.S. dollars) by 2030. In another innovation, Abbott has begun clinical use of the world's first dual chamber leadless pacemaker in China.

The Aveir DR, which consists of two leadless components, addresses common cardiac issues like bradycardia, enhancing the synchronization of heart pacing.

This device employs implant-to-implant communication technology designed to optimize device efficiency while minimizing energy consumption.

The first successful implantation occurred at Ruijin Hainan Hospital, signifying a key advancement in cardiac therapy suitable for Chinese patients.

Additionally, the introduction of green hydrogen fuel marks a pivotal advancement in Beijing's efforts to decarbonize its public transportation system.

CHN Energy Guohua Energy Investment Co Ltd delivered high-purity green hydrogen to a Sinopec refueling station, enabling its use in hydrogen fuel cell buses.

This initiative aligns with China's broader mission to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, promoting sustainable energy solutions.

The annual gaokao, or national college entrance examinations, will see enhanced integrity measures with the implementation of AI monitoring systems across multiple regions in China.

Provinces including Jiangxi and Hubei have adopted AI technology to monitor examination rooms, aiming to detect and prevent cheating.

The AI systems are designed to analyze real-time behavior during the exams, ensuring compliance and integrity.

In another cultural development, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences recently revealed significant achievements in technological archaeology, including the restoration of a millennium-old crown from the Tubo period, marking a substantial contribution to cultural heritage conservation.

Discoveries from joint archaeological projects highlight the integration of traditional techniques with new technology, further enriching understanding of ancient Chinese civilization.
