China Unveils Names for Lunar Spacesuit and Manned Rover in Preparation for Moon Missions

The spacesuit is named 'Wangyu,' which translates to 'gazing into the cosmos,' and is designed to complement the existing extravehicular spacesuit known as 'Feitian,' meaning 'flying into space.' According to the CMSA, the names signify the advancement and aspirations of China's manned space program as it embarks on missions to the moon and beyond.

The manned lunar rover, termed 'Tansuo,' translates to 'explore the unknown,' encapsulating its intended role in facilitating scientific discovery on the lunar surface.

Both names were selected from approximately 9,000 public proposals, reflecting a broad engagement with the Chinese public in its space initiatives.

China's plan involves sending astronauts to the moon before 2030, with preparations including the launch of two carrier rockets.

These will transport a manned spacecraft and a lunar lander into lunar orbit, where the two vehicles will rendezvous and dock.

Astronauts will then transfer to the lander for their descent to the moon.

Upon landing, astronauts will operate the lunar rover for scientific exploration activities.

The rover is expected to feature capabilities that include manned driving, lunar surface movement, positioning support, and safety assistance, thereby aiding astronauts in their scientific endeavors.

The CMSA has reported that the research and development processes for both the Wangyu spacesuit and Tansuo rover are progressing as planned, furthering China’s commitment to exploring space while emphasizing peaceful use and contribution to global humanity through its space advancements.
