China's Railways Brace for 2025 Spring Festival Travel Boom

Massive infrastructure support and policy shifts underpin a project 510 million passenger journeys for the festive period
The 2025 Spring Festival travel season commenced on Tuesday and is set to carry through until February 22, spanning a total of 40 days.

According to China Railway Group Co., this period marks an enormous surge in passenger travel, with the railways expected to facilitate approximately 510 million trips, translating to an average of 12.75 million journeys each day.

On the inaugural day of this bustling travel period, national railways are anticipated to manage 10.3 million passenger trips.

This figure underscores a significant public eagerness for travel, with passenger numbers forecasted to incrementally rise throughout the festival duration.

This year's celebration of the Spring Festival is characterized by an 8-day public holiday and a noteworthy relaxation of China's visa-free transit policy, enhancing mobility and accessibility for domestic and international travelers alike.

The festival's cultural significance has also surged following its inclusion in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list, elevating its global prominence and appeal.

To accommodate the anticipated surge in traveler numbers, China Railway has announced strategic expansions in passenger service capacity.

This includes leveraging new rail lines inaugurated in 2024 and deploying 185 additional Fuxing high-speed trains, which are engineered to reach speeds of up to 350 kilometers per hour.

These enhancements are set to substantially extend the network’s capacity.

Moreover, China Railway is committed to enhancing the passenger experience through improving ticketing systems and station services.

They will also ensure the efficient transportation of critical supplies, vital for the smooth functioning of communities during the festival.

This includes prioritizing the movement of essential goods like food, spring farming supplies, and holiday necessities, as well as securing adequate coal transportation to stabilize supply chains over the festive period.

With the Spring Festival being a period of significant cultural and economic activity, these measures are pivotal in not only supporting citizen festivities but also in facilitating local economies and ensuring essential goods and services are adequately available.
