China's Digital Economy Revenue Surges in Q1 2025

China's digital industry sees significant growth with a revenue increase of 9.4% in the first quarter, driven by advancements in 5G technology and artificial intelligence.
China's digital industry generated 8.5 trillion yuan (approximately 1.18 trillion U.S. dollars) in revenue during the first quarter of 2025, marking a significant increase of 9.4% from the previous year, according to data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

This growth rate represents an increase of 4.4 percentage points compared to the same period in 2024.

In a sector breakdown, the manufacturing segment saw a 10.4% revenue increase, while digital services grew by 8.2%.

The momentum in China's digital economy is being further fueled by advancements in 5G technology, with the number of 5G base stations exceeding 4.39 million by March, achieving a user penetration rate of 75.9%.

The software industry also experienced robust performance, generating revenues of 3.1 trillion yuan, a year-on-year rise of 10.6%.

The Chinese government continues to emphasize the importance of digital technology in upgrading its traditional industries, as outlined in the recent government work report, which highlights plans to accelerate digitalization in manufacturing and foster service providers with expertise in both industry and digital technologies.

Moreover, China's commitment to innovation is evident through its 'AI Plus' initiative, aimed at integrating digital technologies with the nation's manufacturing capabilities.

The initiative encourages collaboration across various sectors to maximize the potential of artificial intelligence in driving industrial transformation.

Additionally, the demand for talent in the field of artificial intelligence is surging, with tech companies actively recruiting to fill millions of positions.

Recent job fairs revealed that thousands of opportunities are available in AI-related fields, as firms like Unitree Robotics and other technology innovators strive to meet the growing market demand.

At the same time, China's express delivery sector demonstrated notable growth, with the express delivery development index rising 6.5% year-on-year in April, signaling increasing business activities in the courier industry.

Furthermore, the introduction of the world's largest fleet of driverless electric mining trucks in Inner Mongolia highlights China's advancements in autonomous technology, featuring 100 trucks equipped with cutting-edge autonomous driving capabilities.

In the corporate sector, Alibaba Group reported a revenue of 236.45 billion yuan ($32.6 billion) for the first quarter, a 7% increase year-on-year, underpinned by significant growth in its cloud business and AI product offerings.

In the automotive industry, Geely Automobile Holdings saw a staggering 264% increase in its net income, attributed to robust demand for its new energy vehicle lineup, while China's financial policy measures, including a cut in the reserve requirement ratio, are intended to augment liquidity in the financial markets, ensuring sustained economic recovery amid global uncertainties.
