China Implements Visa-Free Access for Citizens of Five Latin American Nations

China Implements Visa-Free Access for Citizens of Five Latin American Nations

China unveils a trial visa-free policy for Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay to enhance bilateral relations.
BEIJING, June 1 -- On June 1, China officially launched a trial policy allowing visa-free entry for citizens of Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay.

This initiative marks the first instance of China providing such access to countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Under this policy, which will remain in effect until May 31, 2026, holders of ordinary passports from the five nations can enter China without a visa for up to 30 days.

The purpose of this entry includes business, tourism, family visits, cultural exchanges, and transit.

This move aligns with China’s broader strategy to foster high-level opening-up and expand visa-free access globally.

With this addition, China now offers unilateral visa-free entry to 43 countries.

Travel between Latin America and China is becoming increasingly feasible, aided by improved air connectivity and eased entry regulations.

Notably, in 2024, a direct flight was introduced between Mexico City and Shenzhen, China, becoming the longest direct international passenger route from China, covering over 14,000 kilometers.

Additional flight routes, such as Beijing to Madrid to São Paulo, Madrid to Havana, and Beijing to Tijuana to Mexico City, have further solidified the connections between China and Latin America.

The news of the new visa policy has garnered positive reactions in Latin America.

Carolina Araya, a Chilean citizen teaching Spanish at Anhui International Studies University, expressed enthusiasm on social media, highlighting the ease it would bring for her family to visit.

Meanwhile, Carola Ramon from the Argentine Council of Foreign Relations noted the increased cooperation in areas like cultural exchange and sports between Argentina and China, anticipating that this policy would deepen interpersonal connections across the region.

Economic ties between China and Latin America have seen significant growth over the years, with bilateral trade expanding to over $500 billion in 2024, a doubling from a decade prior.

The demand for Chinese products, particularly electric vehicles, has surged, while Latin American exports, such as Chilean cherries and Argentine beef, have gained popularity in China.

Since late 2023, China has been evolving its visa policies, introducing various traveler-friendly measures.

In May, China announced that citizens from Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, and Bahrain will also benefit from visa-free entry for up to 30 days from June 9, 2025, through June 8, 2026. Additionally, the visa-free transit period has been extended to 240 hours for travelers from 54 countries.

Data from the implementation of these measures is promising; during the past year, China recorded 3.39 million entries under its unilateral visa-free policy, a 1,200 percent increase compared to the previous year.

During the recent May Day holiday, 380,000 people entered China visa-free, showcasing a 72.7 percent year-on-year rise.

Experts like Yu Haibo, an associate professor of tourism management, have recognized that these developments underscore China’s dedication to a more inclusive form of economic globalization.

The visa-free policy for Latin American nations is anticipated to foster more connections, not just through tourism but also through business and cultural exchanges.
