China Experiences Significant Increase in Inter-Regional Travel During Dragon Boat Festival

Official statistics reveal a 10.8% rise in inter-regional trips as the nation celebrates the traditional Duanwu Festival.
BEIJING — China reported a substantial year-on-year increase of 10.8 percent in inter-regional trips during the recent Dragon Boat Festival, with official data released by the Ministry of Transport indicating that over 230.97 million trips were made on Saturday, the first day of the holiday.

Road travel dominated the statistics, accounting for approximately 209.99 million trips, reflecting an 11.3 percent increase from the same period last year.

Meanwhile, railway travel reached nearly 18.12 million passengers, marking a growth of 5 percent year on year.

Waterway travel saw a notable surge, with passenger numbers reaching 959,000, which represents a robust increase of 21.3 percent compared to the previous year.

Air travel remained stable, with airlines handling 1.911 million passenger trips, remaining unchanged from last year's figures.

The Dragon Boat Festival, known as Duanwu Festival in Chinese, celebrates its occurrence on the fifth day of the fifth month in the lunar calendar, with this year's celebration taking place on May 31 and continuing through June 2.

In addition to the holiday statistics, the Ministry of Transport reported that China's transport sector facilitated 22.74 billion inter-regional trips from January to April this year, reflecting a 3.8 percent increase from the same timeframe in 2024. Out of these, 20.96 billion trips were made via roadways, while waterway travel contributed 76.55 million trips.

Commercial freight transport also witnessed significant growth, with total freight volume reaching 18.09 billion tonnes, delivering a year-on-year rise of 4.7 percent.

Additionally, fixed-asset investment in the transport sector accumulated to 950.3 billion yuan (approximately 132.3 billion U.S. dollars) during the same period.

As the festivities unfolded, traditional dragon boat racing became a focal point for community engagement, highlighting a combination of cultural heritage and contemporary sporting enthusiasm across the nation.

Events were scheduled nationwide, further stimulating domestic travel and tourism.

The reported increases in travel and tourism align with China’s broader efforts to enhance public fitness, economic revitalization, and cultural celebration, showcasing a continuing trend of growth in the transport and tourism sectors.
