Celebrating the Legacy of Composer Xian Xinghai and His Bond with Kazakhstan

A rich cultural history unfolds as the 120th anniversary of Chinese composer Xian Xinghai is marked by ceremonies and performances linking China and Kazakhstan.
This year marks the 120th anniversary of the birth of Xian Xinghai, a prominent Chinese composer whose legacy has become a symbol of enduring cultural ties between China and Kazakhstan.

Born in 1905, Xian's life was dramatically altered by the outbreak of World War II. In 1941, he found himself in Moscow, and with the war escalating, he journeyed alone to Almaty, Kazakhstan, in search of refuge, where he would form a significant bond with Kazakh composer Bakhytzhan Baikadamov.

As fate would have it, Xian met Baikadamov during a time of great hardship and uncertainty.

Offering shelter and companionship, Baikadamov fostered a creative kinship that transcended language.

Through music, the two composers communicated their shared struggles and aspirations, transforming each note into a testament of resilience amid the chaos of war.

Baldyrgan Baikadamova, the daughter of Baikadamov, reflected on her family's role in preserving Xian's legacy, noting the importance of honoring his wish to convey the stories of his time in Almaty back to China.

For over four decades, the Baikadamov family maintained a sacred trust to find Xian’s family and share their experiences with them.

Xian’s contributions to music during this turbulent phase were profound.

In Almaty, he produced significant works, including the symphonies 'Liberation of the Nation' and 'Sacred War,' along with the orchestral suite 'Red All Over the River.' Drawing inspiration from Kazakh musical traditions, he composed 'Amangeldy,' dedicated to the Kazakh national hero, which resonated with local audiences and became an anthem of anti-fascism.

His time in Kazakhstan was marked not only by artistic creation but also by active engagement within the community.

Xian taught music theory, mentored young musicians, and organized public concerts, thereby fostering cultural exchange and creating bonds that enriched both the Kazakh and Chinese musical landscapes.

In December 2023, a landmark event was held in Panyu, Guangdong Province, at the Xinghai Concert Hall, named in honor of Xian.

The Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra performed a newly adapted version of 'Amangeldy,' showcasing the deep connection established between the two nations through music.

The adaptation, created by Kazakh composer Bakir Bayakhunov, illustrated the seamless blend of Kazakh melodies with Chinese orchestral elements.

Xian's commitment to his craft was also expressed through his earlier works, including 'The Yellow River Cantata,' composed during his tenure at the Lu Xun Academy of Arts.

This piece, finished in the late 1930s, became emblematic of national pride and a rallying cry during a time of struggle.

In October 2024, the Baikadamov State Choir of Kazakhstan is set to perform 'The Yellow River Cantata' in Wuhan, commemorating its 85th anniversary.

In Almaty, Xian Xinghai Avenue and Baikadamov Street run parallel, symbolizing the indelible connection between these two artists and the cultures they represent.

As Baldyrgan Baikadamova prepares to return to China to donate items belonging to Xian and share the stories of their intertwined legacies, she emphasizes the importance of this cultural and familial bond.

Her commitment to preserving their shared history serves as a significant reminder of the enduring friendships forged through the universality of music.
